Helms Bakery

Project overview

Once the home of the beloved Helms Bakery, the Helms Design District is a revitalized icon in the heart of Culver City; a historical Los Angeles landmark reborn as a vibrant destination for culture, commerce, and community. Its transformation into a retail and mixed-use campus created a unique opportunity to unite historic character with contemporary design. The restored and repurposed Helms Bakery reopened in 2024—55 years after closing in 1969—bringing new life to the landmark. The restroom's Art Deco style pays tribute to the 1930s, when the bakery first opened.

The brief

With a focus on authenticity and functionality, the brief called for commercial restrooms that respected the architectural legacy of the Helms Bakery building while offering a modern, intuitive experience. Durability, ADA compliance, and a refined aesthetic were central to the specification. In sourcing elements for the renovation, the design team thoughtfully chose local vendors from the neighboring Culver City Arts District , giving a nod to community and nostalgia in the present-day interpretation of the historic space.

The solution

The Monolith C Series, specified for its clean lines and seamless installation, serves as the architectural anchor for the restroom. Complemented by Radius fixtures in a warm Brass PVD finish, the space achieves a balance between industrial heritage and contemporary elegance while leaning into Southern California's distinctive interpretation of Art Deco.

Both were chosen for their robust construction and timeless forms, enhancing daily functionality while maintaining visual harmony with the broader design language of Helms Bakery. Their minimalist design ethos allows them to integrate comfortably within more decorative styles, underscoring the adaptability of the products within this historic yet reimagined setting.

The result

The finished restrooms are clean, efficient, and quietly luxurious. The solid surface Monolith C delivers seamless ADA compliance and effortless maintenance, while the brass Radius fixtures punctuate the space with a modern yet timeless aesthetic. The installation honors the legacy of the site while setting a new standard for design-conscious commercial amenities in Los Angeles.
