Outstanding design to achieve Outstanding environmental compliance
The Crystal: A sustainable cities initiative by Siemens
Project overview
At The Splash Lab, we love working with the industry’s best architectural firms and interior designers to redefine the hand-washing experience and people’s perceptions of what a washroom can be. An example of this was when we collaborated with Perkins & Will London, the interior architects on The Crystal building by Siemens in London’s Royal Docks. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre, The Crystal is one of the world’s most sustainable buildings, achieving both Outstanding BREEAM compliance and platinum LEED accreditation – the most stringent standards for sustainable design and construction. The building is powered by solar energy and a ground-source heat pump. The brief
The Splash Lab was engaged to provide the washroom products with a focus on the hand-washing experience. Not only were we tasked with creating a pleasurable experience for the user, we also had to apply an aesthetic that matched the client’s forward-thinking values. An added challenge was that the basins had to be secured through the floor due to the lightweight wall structure. The solution
The modular Monolith Basin System was used as a base to create customised sinks with floor-standing legs and a glass splash-back. In addition to designing and producing the project's bespoke Corian sinks, we looked specifically at the water savings that could be made through the implementation of the correct taps. This was a necessary consideration to satisfy the stringent BREEAM requirements needed to achieve Outstanding compliance.
